These directions are a simple hand washing methods. This should work for any hat that is ok with getting wet, definitely check your label. Some hats can just be put in the dishwasher on the top shelf, which is even easier! If your hat can go through the dishwasher I definitely recommend a cap cage. Otherwise, let’s move on with simple hand washing!
Here’s my sweaty hat. You see that dark line along the brim just above the bill? That is all nasty sweat. I wore my hat out kayaking Memorial Day weekend and this is the result. In order to get that stain out we are going to need a few things:
- A sink or bucket full of warm water
- About a tablespoon of color-safe laundry detergent
- Spot treatment (Spray n’ Wash, Shout, Oxy Clean, etc.)
Once you’ve got all that together, just follow these 5 simple steps!
Mix the laundry detergent with your warm water. I like to mix it in as the faucet is filling my sink, but if you aren\’t able to do that just make sure to get it sloshed around and good and mixed up.
Spray the stained area with your spot treatment of choice. Let it sit for about 5 minutes before moving on to step 3.
Time to throw your hat in the soapy water. Make sure to mix it around a bit and rub the stained area a little bit. I\’ve left my hat in the water for as much as 4 hours without issue. How long you need to leave it will depend on how bad your stain is. Come back every once in a while and slosh it around a bit to help it clean.
Take your hat out and rinse it with cold water. The cold water works better to remove the soap. When you stop seeing bubbles or any sign of the soap on your hat or water run-off you\’re good.
Shake off excess water and find a good spot to let it air dry. Be sure to shape it back the way it should be if it has folded or crumpled at all while wet.
After air drying your hat should once again be all clean!
