There’s nothing quite like the thrill of embarking on a canoeing adventure with family. Recently, my brothers and I set out on an unforgettable journey down the Missouri River, paddling from Stanton, ND, to Cross Ranch State Park. This trip offered not only the excitement of navigating the river but also the tranquility of camping at one of North Dakota’s beautiful state parks.
Starting the Adventure in Stanton, ND
Our journey began near the small town of Stanton, North Dakota. With a boat launch on the Missouri just south of town, Stanton serves as the perfect launching point for a canoeing expedition. After securing our gear and ensuring our canoes were river-ready, we set off, eager to explore the natural beauty that lay ahead.
Canoeing the Mighty Missouri River
As we paddled down the Missouri River, we were greeted by breathtaking scenery at every turn. The river, with its calm yet powerful flow, provided the perfect backdrop for our adventure. Towering bluffs, lush groves of trees, and wide-open prairies lined the riverbanks, creating a picturesque landscape that seemed to stretch endlessly.
Along the way, we encountered a variety of wildlife. Bald eagles soared overhead, their sharp eyes scanning the water for fish. Deer and other woodland creatures made appearances along the shoreline, adding to the sense of wilderness. The rhythmic sound of our paddles slicing through the water became a meditative experience, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the natural world.
Arriving at Cross Ranch State Park
After a day of paddling, we arrived at our destination: Cross Ranch State Park. This park is a gem in North Dakota, known for its stunning landscapes and rich biodiversity. We set up camp, eager to relax and soak in the beauty around us.
Camping at Cross Ranch State Park was a highlight of our trip. The park offers well-maintained campsites, each with a unique view of the surrounding nature. As the sun set, we gathered around the campfire, sharing stories and reliving the day’s adventures. The night sky, free from light pollution, revealed a blanket of stars, making for a perfect end to our day.
Tips for a Successful Canoe and Camping Trip
- Plan Your Route: Familiarize yourself with the river’s flow and any potential obstacles. Having a map and a GPS device can be extremely helpful.
- Pack Wisely: Ensure you have all necessary gear, including life jackets, waterproof bags, and camping supplies.
- Respect Nature: Leave no trace by packing out all trash and being mindful of the environment. This helps preserve the natural beauty for future adventurers.
Conclusion
While this trip was originally supposed to be a two day trip stretching all the way to Bismarck, it was unfortunately cut short by wild 30 mph wind gusts on day 2 that kept us off the river. This was supposed to be a fun trip for my family and I, so we made the decision to play it safe and find other ways to fill day 2 of our trip.
Even so, canoeing down the Missouri River from Stanton to Cross Ranch State Park with my brothers was an adventure of a lifetime. The combination of paddling through North Dakota’s scenic landscapes and camping under the stars created memories we’ll cherish forever. Whether you’re an experienced paddler or a novice looking for a new adventure, this trip offers the perfect blend of excitement and serenity. Pack your gear, hit the water, and discover the magic of the Missouri River.
